19 military ships: China displays strength near Taiwan.

China conducted military exercises around Taiwan
China conducted military exercises around Taiwan using more naval vessels than ever before. This was a response to the United States' statement about deterring Beijing's aggression in the region.
The Ministry of Defense of Taipei reported the detection of 19 Chinese ships - the largest number since the PLA exercises following the inauguration of Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te in May of last year. The movement of the aircraft carrier 'Shandong' was also observed.
The Chinese exercises are an attempt to test the foreign policy of the Trump administration, which focuses on countering Beijing in East Asia and urges Europe to increase defense spending against Russia.
US Secretary of Defense Pete Ghezette promised to provide missile systems, troops, and other resources to counter China during visits to the Philippines and Japan. It was also stated that the US will ensure 'reliable deterrence' in the Taiwan Strait.
Taipei welcomed these statements, as the Trump administration had questioned support for Ukraine, moving closer to Russia. Trump also stated that Taiwan should pay for protection and accused it of stealing business.
The exercises were conducted following the publication of a memorandum in the Washington Post detailing how the US should repel an attack by China on Taiwan. The document reached the Pentagon.
China conducts such exercises following Lai's rise to power. They consider Taiwan as their territory, which must be controlled by force if necessary. China does not accept this and must respond and punish Taiwan for its actions.
The Beijing government department stated that Lai's approach is 'unlimited' provocation.
