Oksana Sabuschko

Birthdate: 19.09.1960

Oksana Stefanowna Sabuschko - Ukrainian writer, poet, essayist, journalist, teacher.

Place of birth. Education. Born in Lutsk in a family of philologists. In 1968, she moved to Kyiv with her parents. In 1982, she graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (1982), and in 1986 - she completed her postgraduate studies at the Department of Ethics and Aesthetics of the same university. In 1987, she defended her dissertation 'The Aesthetic Nature of Lyric Poetry as a Genre of Art' and received the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophical Sciences.

Career. She began publishing in literary journals (poems) in 1972.

From 1986 to 1988, she taught aesthetics and cultural history at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kyiv.

Since 1988, she has been a researcher at the Institute of Philosophy of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

From 1992 to 1994, she taught at universities in the USA (Pennsylvania, Harvard, Pittsburgh) as a 'Writer in Residence' and a Fulbright Scholar.

Since 1996, when the novel 'Field Research of Ukrainian Sex' was published in Ukraine and 'A Kingdom of Fallen Statues' in Canada, she has continued her career as a professional writer.

In 2001, she taught Creative Writing at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.

She travels extensively. She holds various public offices - Vice President of the Ukrainian PEN Center, member of the Supervisory Board of the International Renaissance Foundation, and member of various editorial boards, juries, and competition committees in Ukraine and abroad.

Fame. Her works have been translated into more than 20 languages, and separate books have been published in Austria, Bulgaria, Italy, Iran, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Russia, Romania, Serbia, the USA, Hungary, France, Croatia, the Czech Republic, and Sweden.

Performances based on the works of the writer have been shown on many stages in Ukraine, Europe, and North America.

Numerous Ukrainian and foreign composers have set Sabuschko's poetry to music.

Winner of many national and international awards: National Prize of Ukraine Taras Shevchenko (2019), Antonovych International Foundation Award (2008), Central and Eastern European Literature Prize 'Angelus' (2013), All-Ukrainian Award 'Woman of the Third Millennium' in the category (2015), 'BBC Book of the Year' (2020). Order of Princess Olha, 3rd class (2009).
