Ukraine Revives Its Presence in Asian Grain Markets
Ukraine is actively engaging in Asian grain markets. After the onset of the large-scale war, Ukrainian exporters and grain traders quickly adapted to new conditions and partially restored their presence in these markets.
This is reported by Delo.ua.
The main importers of agricultural products from Ukraine in Asia are China, Indonesia, and Turkey.
Before the war, China was the largest buyer of Ukrainian corn and barley. In 2020-2021, it purchased 8 million tons of corn and 3 million tons of barley. However, due to the war, corn exports decreased by almost half, and barley exports tenfold.
In the 2023-2024 season, grain exports are beginning to recover, but strict state regulation and the revision of import volumes complicate the situation. China has stricter requirements for imported agricultural products compared to other markets in the region. Additionally, the war complicates relations with China due to its cooperation with Russia.
Indonesia is another important market for Ukraine. During the war, part of this market was lost. Previously, Ukraine exported 3 million tons of wheat annually to Indonesia, but in 2022 the amount decreased to 0.35 million tons. In 2023, it increases to 0.66 million tons, and in the first 9 months of 2024, 1.96 million tons of wheat were supplied.
Turkey is also an important partner for Ukraine and purchases major grain crops such as wheat, corn, and barley. Every year, it imports about 1 million tons of corn from Ukraine.
